Turkish Present Continuous Tense (-iyor): Step-by-Step Conjugation Guide

What is the -iyor Tense? (Şimdiki Zaman)

The present continuous tense expresses actions happening right now (“I am going”, “she is eating”), and is also frequently used for near-future scheduled actions (“I am coming tomorrow”).

The core tense marker is -iyor (following 4-way vowel harmony: -iyor, -ıyor, -uyor, -üyor).

1. Positive Conjugation Formula

[Verb Stem] + [(ı/i/u/ü)yor] + [Personal Suffix]

Conjugation of gelmek (to come) → Stem: gel

  • Ben gel + -iyorumgeliyorum (I am coming)
  • Sen gel + -iyorsungeliyorsun (You are coming)
  • O gel + -iyorgeliyor (He/she is coming)
  • Biz gel + -iyoruzgeliyoruz (We are coming)
  • Siz gel + -iyorsunuzgeliyorsunuz (You are coming)
  • Onlar gel + -iyorlargeliyorlar (They are coming)

2. The Famous Vowel-Drop Rule

If a verb root already ends in a vowel (a or e), that vowel drops off or narrows before -iyor attaches:

  • başla- (to start): drops abaşl + -ıyor = başlıyor (NOT başla-ıyor)
  • bekle- (to wait): drops ebekl + -iyor = bekliyor (NOT bekle-iyor)
  • ye- (to eat): drops ey + -iyor = yiyor (is eating)

3. Negative Form: Negation Suffix (-m-)

Negation in the present continuous is made by inserting -m- before the tense suffix:

  • gel + -m + -iyor + -um = gelmiyorum (I am not coming)
  • anla + -m + -ıyor + -um = anlamıyorum (I do not understand)

Official TurkLogic Curriculum Reference Note

The Present Continuous Tense (Şimdiki Zaman) describes actions happening right now, temporary situations, or planned future actions.

Suffix Formation

The suffix is -iyor. It’s added to the verb stem. If the verb stem ends in a consonant, a buffer vowel (ı, i, u, ü based on 4-way vowel harmony with the stem’s last vowel) is inserted before -yor.

If the verb stem ends in -a or -e, these vowels change to ı or i respectively before -yor (or u, ü for some stems like de-diyor, ye-yiyor):

  • gel- + buffer ‘i’ + -yorgeliyor (is coming)
  • yap- + buffer ‘ı’ + -yoryapıyor (is doing)
  • bekle- (wait) → bekliyor (is waiting) (e → i)
  • anla- (understand) → anlıyor (is understanding) (a → ı)
