How to Express the Future in Turkish (Gelecek Zaman)

Conjugation of kalmak (to stay)
Ben kalacağım(I will stay)Sen kalacaksın(You will stay)O kalacak(He/she will stay)Biz kalacağız(We will stay)Siz kalacaksınız(You will stay)Onlar kalacaklar(They will stay)
Official TurkLogic Curriculum Reference Note
The Future Tense (Gelecek Zaman) is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future, intentions, or predictions.
Suffix Formation:
The suffix is -ecek or -acak, depending on A-Type vowel harmony:
- If the last vowel of the stem is a front vowel (e, i, ö, ü), use -ecek.
- If the last vowel of the stem is a back vowel (a, ı, o, u), use -acak.
If the verb stem ends in a vowel, a buffer consonant ‘y’ is inserted: -yecek / -yacak.
The ‘k’ in -ecek/-acak often softens to ‘ğ’ when followed by a personal suffix starting with a vowel (e.g., 1st person singular/plural).
- gel- → gelecek (will come)
- yap- → yapacak (will do)
- bekle- → bekleyecek (will wait)
Conjugation (gitmek — to go)
| Person | Positive | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| Ben | gideceğim | gitmeyeceğim |
| Sen | gideceksin | gitmeyeceksin |
| O | gidecek | gitmeyecek |
| Biz | gideceğiz | gitmeyeceğiz |
| Siz | gideceksiniz | gitmeyeceksiniz |
| Onlar | gidecekler | gitmeyecekler |
Note: Consonant softening applies to

Negation
The negative is formed by adding -me / -ma before the future suffix, with a buffer ‘y’: -meyecek / -mayacak.
- Example: Ben gitmeyeceğim. (I will not go.)
