Turkish Plural Suffix: -lar & -ler Rules, Exceptions, and When NOT to Use Them
How the Plural Suffix Works in Turkish
Making nouns plural in Turkish is remarkably straightforward compared to English. There are no irregular plurals (like foot/feet or mouse/mice). Every noun becomes plural by adding either -lar or -ler, following Two-Way Vowel Harmony:
- Add
-larif the last vowel is a back vowel (a,ı,o,u):kitap→ kitaplar (books)araba→ arabalar (cars)çocuk→ çocuklar (children)kapı→ kapılar (doors)
- Add
-lerif the last vowel is a front vowel (e,i,ö,ü):ev→ evler (houses)öğrenci→ öğrenciler (students)göz→ gözler (eyes)gün→ günler (days)
⚠️ The Golden Number Rule: NEVER Pluralize After Quantities!
In English, we say “three cats” or “five books”.
In Turkish, if a number or quantifier precedes the noun, the noun MUST remain singular!
| English | Incorrect Turkish ❌ | Correct Turkish ✅ |
|---|---|---|
| Three cats | Üç kediler | Üç kedi |
| Five books | Beş kitaplar | Beş kitap |
| Many people | Çok insanlar | Çok insan |
| A few days | Birkaç günler | Birkaç gün |
| How many students? | Kaç öğrenciler? | Kaç öğrenci? |
Logic: The number already conveys that there are multiple items, so adding
-lar/-lerwould be redundant information. Turkish values linguistic efficiency!
Official TurkLogic Curriculum Reference Note
Nouns (isimler) are words that represent people, places, things, or ideas. Turkish nouns have some key characteristics:
No Grammatical Gender:
Unlike many European languages, Turkish nouns do not have grammatical gender. The same word is used regardless of gender (e.g., ‘o’ means he, she, or it). This simplifies learning considerably.
Number (Singular & Plural):
Nouns can be singular or plural. The plural is formed by adding the suffix -lar or -ler to the noun, according to Major Vowel Harmony:
- If the last vowel of the noun is a back vowel (a, ı, o, u), add -lar.
- If the last vowel of the noun is a front vowel (e, i, ö, ü), add -ler.
Examples of Plural Formation:
- kitap (book) → kitaplar (books)
- ev (house) → evler (houses)
- kedi (cat) → kediler (cats)
- masa (table) → masalar (tables)
- arkadaş (friend) → arkadaşlar (friends)
- göz (eye) → gözler (eyes)
